In 1994 a group of students from the from the Royal School of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh began to share their efforts in performing traditional Khmer arts, music and dance. In 1995 a performance space was acquired and has been a venue for shows and exhibitions ever since.

Sovanna Phum translates as " Magic Village ". Incorporated as an association in 1995, the group's goal is to bring Khmer traditional culture to a wider audience, both locally and internationally.
For this, it has organized hundreds of performances since its inception.

A. Shadow Puppets
- Sbeik Thom - Reamker - The Khmer version of the Ramayana
- Sbeik Touch - also known as "Äian", its stories, often comic in nature, draw their inspiration from scenes of the everyday life in Cambodia . Traditional legends are depicted as well as modern messages regarding child exploitation, reproductive health and freedom of expression.
A limited number of shadow puppets are also available for sale, at Sovonna phum
B. Classical Dance
Cambodia 's famed traditional dance comes to life with the backing of a live orchestra, drawing on a wide range of diverse traditions.
C. Circus
Clowns, acrobats, jugglers and musicians provide clever and comic performances to amuse and delight all generations.
D. Khmer Orchestra
None of the above would be possible without the music of the traditional Khmer Orchestra, the"Pien Peat", consisting of

Several places in town put on exhibitions of contemporary art, photographs, handicrafts, and antiques.Java Cafe & Gallery, the French Cultural Center (#218, Street 184) and Reyum Gallery (#47, Street 178) all offer regularly changing exhibitions. Reyum Gallery features the works of some of Cambodia ’s finest contemporary artists, and has recently received an international award. Top end hotels such as InterContinental, Le Royal, Cambodiana and Sunway offer changing exhibitions. The Foreign Correspondents Club occasionally has photo showings. Also check out galleries such as Asasax Art Gallery , New Art Gallery , and Couleurs D’Asie. Check the Friday Cambodia Daily and the ‘Listings’ section of the Phnom Penh Post for new exhibitions.

There are now several big screens in town, but they feature only Khmer language films. English language movies shown in private viewing rooms at Movie Street Video Center , #116, Sihanouk. Talkin to a Stranger (Sunday, 6PM ) offer weekly movie showings in a bar venue. Mekong River is offering multiple daily showings of the documentary film, ‘Pol Pot: The History of Genocide’ ($3 admission to movie). Le Cinema at the French Cultural Centre (#214, Street 184 Tel: 023-721383) hosts French films at 6:30PM every few days.
